When my friend offered to host a book signing event for me in her salt cave, I was a bit confused. What exactly is a Salt Cave and why do people go to them?

In today’s busy and stressful world, it’s more important than ever to find natural ways to relax, recharge, and care for our overall health. One wellness trend that has been quietly gaining popularity is the use of salt caves—peaceful, spa-like rooms made with thousands of pounds of imported Himalayan salt. These pink-hued sanctuaries may look beautiful and Instagram-worthy, but the real magic lies in the potential health benefits they offer.
What Are Salt Caves?
Salt caves, also called halotherapy rooms, are man-made environments designed to mimic the natural salt mines found in Eastern Europe. The walls, floor, and ceiling are often covered in pure Himalayan salt, known for its pink-orange glow and high mineral content. During a session, a halogenerator grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into microscopic particles and disperses it into the air. As you sit or lie back in a cozy lounge chair, you simply breathe in the salty air while relaxing in a peaceful, dimly lit space.

Why Himalayan Salt?
Himalayan salt is hand-mined from ancient sea beds located deep within the Himalayan mountains. It’s believed to be one of the purest forms of salt on Earth, containing over 80 natural minerals and elements like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. These minerals contribute to the salt’s distinctive color and are thought to play a role in its therapeutic properties.
Respiratory Relief
One of the most well-known benefits of salt cave therapy is respiratory support. Breathing in the tiny salt particles may help reduce inflammation in the airways, loosen mucus, and cleanse the respiratory tract. People suffering from asthma, allergies, sinus infections, bronchitis, or even the common cold often report feeling clearer and more at ease after a session.
Because Himalayan salt is naturally antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, halotherapy may help reduce symptoms and frequency of respiratory flare-ups. It’s not a cure, but many people say they experience improved breathing and less congestion after regular visits.
Skin Health Boost
The salt in these caves doesn’t just help your lungs—it can benefit your skin, too. The minerals in Himalayan salt can help balance your skin’s pH levels and draw out impurities. Halotherapy has shown promise for people with eczema, psoriasis, and acne, as the antibacterial properties may calm inflammation and reduce flare-ups. Some even report softer, more hydrated skin after sessions.
Stress Relief and Mental Wellness
Aside from the physical benefits, salt cave sessions are also known for their ability to promote relaxation and mental clarity. The soft lighting, quiet environment, and grounding energy of the natural salt create a calming atmosphere ideal for meditation or mindfulness. Some compare the experience to spending time near the ocean, where salty air and negative ions lift the mood and promote emotional balance.
Many salt caves also offer add-on services like sound healing or guided meditation making it a multi-sensory escape from the demands of daily life.
Immune System Support
Breathing in salt particles may help boost your body’s natural defense system. By reducing inflammation, clearing toxins, and supporting respiratory function, halotherapy allows the body to function more efficiently. While salt cave sessions are not a replacement for medical care, they can be a wonderful complementary wellness practice, especially during cold and flu season.
My Book Signing Event
Myra Maldonado, the owner of Lakewood Ranch Salt Caves in Bradenton Florida hosts different events in her state of the art salt caves. We started the event with a beautiful crafted charcuterie board and prosecco. Myra explained to the group what to expect inside the cave. Salt is emitted into the air through a vent while we relax in comfortable lounge chairs. The spacious salt cave comfortably fits 10 lounge chairs.

She asked that we not bring liquids inside since if it spills on the floor, the imported salt will dissolve. The floor is covered in loose salt, similar to a sandy beach, which feels great on bare feet or socks; no shoes in the cave. The salt bricks on the cave walls glow in relaxing red and yellow hues, giving the impression you are inside a warm volcano. The temperature in the room was surprisingly cool and most of the attendees appreciated the blankets Myra offered for a cozy, relaxing session.
As for my book signing event, I spoke a bit about myself and the night my husband Mike died in 2015. After almost 10 years, I am able to speak about that tragic night and share the journey of seeking justice for his wrongful death. I read a part of my book, No Simple Highway: A widow’s journey to seek justice for her husband’s death. when the medical examiner finally determined a cause of death for the death certificate, after 4 months of an investigation. The cause was determined to be homicide. Only after the cause was determined was I able to receive Mike’s life insurance policy.
I spoke a bit about my healing journey after loss.
Traveling, yoga, socializing, therapy, writing and even visiting psychic mediums helped me deal with my grief and move forward. The ladies who came asked about dating, my sons and my new life with my husband Pete. We never forget those we loved deeply who are no longer with us, but I firmly believe we can take that love and move forward to live our best life everyday. Sometimes I think I have to live a great life for both me and for Mike who did not get to enjoy these years.
The overall feedback from the event was positive. Thank you so much Myra and the fabulous women who joined me and took home a copy of my book.

One of the best things about salt caves is that they’re non-invasive, drug-free and safe for most people. Sessions usually last 30–45 minutes and require no special preparation. Just sit back, breathe, and let the salt do its work.
Salt & Sound Bath Healing
I’m personally looking forward to returning to Lakewood Ranch Salt Caves for one of the Salt & Sound Bath Healing sessions offered. This therapeutic experience combines the healing properties of Himalayan Salt therapy with soothing vibrations of sound baths.
I love a good sound bath that involves gongs, chimes and singing bowls. What a great place to practice meditation as you balance your body’s energy centers, or chakras, with sound waves.
Whether you’re looking to support your lungs, soothe your skin, or simply take a mindful pause from the world, salt caves offer a natural way to reconnect with your body and mind.
